Launch Supervision

for Aspiring Behaviour Analysts

Join our community of students and early career professionals learning together to become the future of behaviour analytic practice.

What is a Behaviour Analyst?

Behaviour analysts apply the science of behaviour analysis to understand why behaviour occurs and how environments can be arranged to support meaningful behaviour change. Many practitioners pursue certification to demonstrate advanced training in applied behaviour analysis.  The main certification pathway in Australia is via the Association for Behaviour Analysis Australia

Certification typically requires postgraduate coursework, extensive supervised fieldwork, and may require successful completion of a professional examination.

This pathway provides a structured framework for developing deep expertise in behavioural assessment, intervention design, and ethical practice.

Who is our Behaviour Analyst Supervision Program designed for?

Our Behaviour Analyst Supervision Program is designed for practitioners who are:

• completing behaviour analytic coursework and accumulating fieldwork hours
• seeking structured supervision to strengthen their applied behaviour analysis skills
• looking for a supervisor who understands the ever evolving Australian context of the NDIS and/or education settings.

This supervision works best for practitioners who are actively applying behaviour analytic principles in their day-to-day work and want thoughtful discussion of real cases.

What does independent fieldwork supervision involve?

Becoming a certified behaviour analyst requires substantial supervised fieldwork. For example, many certification pathways require 1,500–2,000 hours of behaviour analytic experience under supervision.  Of those hours, you need to spend at least 5% (minimum 75 hours) engaged in direct supervision with a qualified supervisor.

Supervision typically involves:

• review of behaviour analytic cases and intervention design
• feedback on assessment and data analysis
• discussion of ethical and professional practice issues
• observation and feedback on applied behaviour analytic work

The goal of supervision is not simply to accrue hours, but to develop competency in the skills and knowledge listed on the ABA Australia Behaviour Analyst Professional Competencies list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most behaviour analyst certification pathways require trainees to complete a minimum of 1,500 hours of supervised fieldwork experience.

Of these hours, at least 5% must be directly supervised by a qualified behaviour analyst. Supervision typically includes case discussion, feedback on applied work, and opportunities to develop behaviour analytic skills in real-world settings.

It is important to recognise that 1,500 hours represents the minimum requirement for certification. Developing competence in applied behaviour analysis takes time, and some trainees may require additional experience or supervision to fully develop the skills and confidence needed for independent practice.

In most cases, yes. Certification pathways for behaviour analysts typically require trainees to have commenced or completed an approved postgraduate coursework in behaviour analysis while accumulating supervised fieldwork hours.

Supervision is designed to complement this academic training by providing opportunities to apply behaviour analytic principles in real-world practice.

If you are unsure whether your current study program meets certification requirements, it is a good idea to review the relevant certification guidelines or discuss your situation with a qualified supervisor before beginning fieldwork supervision.

The time required to complete behaviour analyst certification varies depending on a practitioner’s study pathway and how quickly they accumulate supervised fieldwork hours.

Most certification pathways require completion of approved postgraduate coursework in behaviour analysis, along with a minimum of 1,500 hours of supervised fieldwork experience.

For many trainees, the process takes between two and four years, depending on their study schedule, employment situation, and the pace at which they accumulate fieldwork hours.

The goal of the process is not only to meet certification requirements, but to develop the knowledge, skills, and professional judgement needed to apply behaviour analysis responsibly in practice.

Supervised fieldwork hours must involve the application of behaviour analytic principles in real-world practice. This typically includes activities such as conducting behavioural assessments, analysing data, designing and implementing interventions, and evaluating outcomes.

Many trainees accumulate fieldwork hours while working in roles that involve supporting behaviour change, such as behaviour support, disability services, education, or clinical services.

However, not all work activities automatically qualify as behaviour analytic fieldwork. The work must involve meaningful opportunities to apply behaviour analytic concepts and receive feedback from a qualified supervisor.

If you are unsure whether your current role provides appropriate experience for supervised fieldwork, discussing your situation with a qualified supervisor can help clarify whether the work environment will support your development as a behaviour analyst.

Yes, many practitioners choose to develop their skills in behaviour support while also working toward behaviour analyst certification. In practice, these pathways can complement each other because both involve applying behavioural principles to understand and support behaviour change.

However, the requirements for each pathway are different. Behaviour support practitioners in Australia are registered through the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and must demonstrate capability against the Positive Behaviour Support Capability Framework. Behaviour analyst certification, on the other hand, requires completion of approved postgraduate coursework in behaviour analysis, supervised fieldwork hours, and successful completion of a certification exam.

Some practitioners gain behaviour support experience while accumulating supervised fieldwork hours for behaviour analyst certification. Others pursue the pathways sequentially.

For practitioners entering behaviour support through the Alternative Assessment Pathway, we are able to support this combined development by providing supervision for the Alternative Pathway while also offering CBA supervision for candidates completing behaviour analyst certification.

Confused by the certification requirements? You're not alone!!

We’re here to cut through the confusion and give you a clear direction.

Some practitioners choose to deepen their expertise by pursuing certification as a behaviour analyst. In this video, I explain what behaviour analyst certification involves, how it differs from behaviour support practice, and what you may want to consider if you are exploring this pathway.

*Please note: This video discusses pathways towards becoming a BCBA, which is a certification under the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board.  This certification will no longer be available to Australian residents from December 2026.

What's included in the Launch Behaviour Analyst Supervision program?

Our Behaviour Analyst Supervision program is designed to provide structured support as trainees develop their skills in applied behaviour analysis and accumulate supervised fieldwork hours. Most practitioners participate through our monthly supervision programs (Comprehensive or Essentials), which combines weekly individual supervision, group discussion sessions, access to curated learning resources, and expert masterclasses.

This structure allows trainees to develop their analytic skills through a combination of guided mentorship, peer discussion, and independent learning while working toward their certification requirements.

For practitioners who prefer a more flexible arrangement, we also offer 1:1 supervision-only options focused on individual case discussion and development of behaviour analytic competencies.

Our Comprehensive and Essential Programs include:

1:1 mentor meetings are an essential part of behaviour support practitioner supervision.

1:1 Mentor Meetings

Weekly sessions to help you tackle a clinical challenge, connect with task list content and shape your analytic skills.

Group discussions enable you to learn from other behaviour support practitioners.

Dynamic Discussions

Gain shared clinical wisdom from peers and supervisors during these weekly topic-based, expert-facilitated discussions.
